Femology Is The New Business Lounge That’s Poised To Be The WeWork Of Detroit For Women Entrepreneurs

An increasing number of women in Detroit are opting to work for themselves. In fact, the number of women-owned businesses in the city increased 32.9 percent since 1997, for a total of 127,900 firms, according to the State of Women-Owned Businesses Report.

But often, entrepreneurs are working from home offices and don’t have a space outside to meet with clients or potential clients. That’s what happened to Meagan Ward. “I quit my job in corporate America in 2015 to start a company that helps women businesses and brands, but when I had to meet clients I did so at places like Starbucks,” she told MadameNoire. “Of course, there would be times we’d get to Starbucks and there would be no tables and we have to find someplace else to meet. That’s just not good for business.”

After so many of those experiences, Ward, founder and CEO of Creatively Flawless, teamed with Ashleigh Brock, a client-turned-business-partner, to create Femology, a membership-based business lounge which is slated to open July 24th in Downtown Detroit.  The space will not only offer a place for women in business to hold meetings, but also events and more. “The space will also allow for members to hold business workshops, seminars, and socials, events that will help build their brands,” said Ward. “I wanted to create a place where women can collaborate.”

Femology looks to attract 100-plus members. Membership includes: access to a women’s based library, a gourmet coffee/tea station, stylish office space, video equipment, and a lounge area with seating, personal mailboxes. The space will also be open on weekends. “We will also be offering a Femology grant to support two women-owned startups each year,” added Ward, who besides owning Creatively Flawless is the founder of a women’s empowerment organization called “The Powerful Women: Cultivating Women of Excellence” which holds events, workshops, and an annual meetup for women in business.

Besides members, Femology is also seeking sponsors and investors as the new entity is also looking to expand within the next nine months. “We will be working on growing into an even larger space to be able to offer our members even more services,” explained Ward. “Our ultimate goal is to have a place that helps women nurture their businesses and their own self-care as well as to help them push their brands into the profitability arena.”
Ward says this idea of Femology has been marinating for some time.  “Two years ago I bought all these chairs, I didn’t have a space for them but I knew I would need them somewhere down the line,” she recalled. “And when I went in one day and quit my job the idea about this space started. I had been working hard in corporate America and having a good year. I knew I was up for a raise but when I met with my boss he said I have good and bad news. The good news was the raise. The bad news was I wouldn’t get it for another year. Mind you it was only a $3 raise, but I had invested so much in my career with the company, I was actually considering waiting. But then I finally realized my worth, quit and went out on my own to help other women create their own brands. Femology is an extension of this goal.” She added with a laugh, “And now those all those chairs I purchased have a home.”
