The closest we’ve had to a Black woman portraying one of Charlie’s Angels was Destiny’s Child singing “Independent Women Pt. 1” for the soundtrack back in 2000.
But seventeen years later, that may be changing.
According to industry publication, The Tracking Board, Sony has hired the two men behind “Narcos,” Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard to rewrite the Charlie’s Angels script.
The new movie is said to be directed by Elizabeth Banks, the woman who directed Pitch Perfect 2.
Many of us know the story. It follows three women detectives and their male sidekick Bosley who solve cases for their unidentified benefactor and boss Charlie.
The roles originated with Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith and we all remember when Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu.
According to The Tracking Board, folks want one of the angels to be Black.
And one of the Black girls at the top of their wishlist is Janelle Monae.
But to be clear, we’re a long way away from that being a reality. After all, casting hasn’t begun and the script hasn’t even been written.
Honestly, whether it’s Janelle or another Black girl, we’re happy to see a Black woman in this position. Hopefully, the others will be occupied by a Latinx, and hopefully another woman of color.
Let’s just shake it all the way up.
Are you here for the Charlie’s Angels remake?
