Ever since Mo’Nique revealed in an essay for The Hollywood Reporter in 2015 that she’d been blackballed in Hollywood, her story has turned into something of Aunt Viv vs. Will Smith and The Fresh Prince proportions. It’s become a game of she said, he said, with the actress even coming at odds with former friend and Precious director Lee Daniels. He said that she got in her own way, she said he pulled the rug out from underneath her after being offered the role of Cookie in Empire and Gloria Gaines (a role given to Oprah Winfrey) in Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
Eventually, the conversation would die down, but the roles would still come in slow for Mo’Nique. Fast forward to this past weekend when the actress and stellar comedian did a standup show at the Apollo Theater. She basically went off on not just Daniels, but Precious producers Tyler Perry and Winfrey.
Of the less expletive-riddled statements made, Mo’Nique said, “Thank you Mr. Lee Daniels, thank you Tyler Perry, thank you Oprah Winfrey. No baby I wasn’t blackballed, I was f–ked up by some ni–as who had no balls. And see, I know they like to say Mo’Nique, ‘you talk too motherf–kin’ much.’ It would kill me not to say the real sh-t. It would kill me not to say the real sh-t. You are not paying me equally. You are not treating me fairly, so y’all can suck my di-k if I had one.”
And while one might think that a person who basically tells Oprah Winfrey to suck a fat one would want to reel it in, Mo’Nique is not one to be scared of what anybody has to say. She defended her comments while speaking to TMZ this week, sitting alongside her husband, Sidney Hicks.
“Everything I say comes from my heart. I’m unapologetic about it,” she said.
Hicks backed up her comments, saying that Perry and Winfrey allowed her character to be trampled when they knew claims of the actress being difficult were false. He said Mo’Nique and Daniels spent their time between shooting Precious hanging out, watching takes and even eating crab legs — not arguing and having difficulties.
“Lee Daniels was a part of it, but Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey, if you remember, they were a part of the production of the movie,” he said. “They stood by and they allowed the statements of her difficulty.”
When asked about possible blowback, which, at this point, likely won’t help her rebuild her career, Mo’Nique said about herself and Hicks, “We not no hiders. We not know runners.”
